PRINCE2® (Projects In Controlled Environments) is a globally recognised project management methodology. Originating from the UK, it is based on the Managing Successful Projects Using PRINCE2® (by OGC). This project management methodology has gained widespread acceptance. Currently PRINCE2® is used in 29 countries across the globe and many companies adopt PRINCE2® as their group-wide standard for Project Management.PRINCE2® is a process-based approach to project management that encapsulates best practise and establishes a framework for control within the project environment. This flexible methodology can be tailored to suit the needs, scale and complexity of any project and ensures that a consistent, methodical and controlled approach is adopted for the management of projects. PRINCE2® says that any project should have:
- An organised and controlled start, i.e. organise and plan things properly before leaping in.
- An organised and controlled middle, i.e. when the project has started, make sure it continues to be organised and controlled.
- An organised and controlled end, i.e. when you've got what you want and the project has finished, tidy up the loose ends.
In order to describe what a project should do when, PRINCE2® has a series of 7 Processes, which cover all the activities needed on a project from planned starting up to effective closing down.
